How To Effectively Spring Clean Your House

It’s that time of year again when you get a spring in your step and an urge brews up inside you to start decluttering your home, wardrobe and life.  For some this is daunting, for others like me (a self confessed OCD neat freak) it’s my idea of heaven.  Here are some quick tips for ways to Spring clean your home.

Clearing Clutter and Organizing During Spring Cleaning

  1. Donate to charity – Start in one room. Any clothes, which are too small and haven’t been worn in over 6 months to a year, can be given to charity. Children’s books and toys, which they have out grown, can also be donated. Linen, old magazines, plates anything that takes up room and you don’t use.
  1. Take to the dump – Anything that is broken. Things that can’t be given to charity, discard.
  1. If you have time to organise a garage sale, this could be a great opportunity to get rid of bigger items and make some extra money.

Trust me. Cleaning will be a lot easier when the clutter is gone.

Getting the Family Involved in Spring Cleaning

If you need a little help in your cleaning endeavours, try to get your family involved. Even the most unwilling helper can make a big difference in the workload. I know what you are thinking. It might actually seem easier to just do everything by yourself rather than try to get your family to help. Don't worry; we've got advice to deal with even those most reluctant helpers. This is actually a great time of year to get the entire family to work together. Try throwing on some music or establishing a family reward for when the work is done.

Get the kids to start in their own rooms. Make them feel special that they are giving their toys that they no longer play with to children who don’t have as much as them.

Products to Use During Spring Cleaning

I love using Gumption to get all the dirty little finger marks off my walls and doors. Also Bi Carb soda is great to use in the bathroom and kitchen. Vinegar is an amazing natural cleaning agent and it’s uses have been reported for centuries. Here is a recipe to make your own.

White Vinegar Cleaning Recipe:

Mix one-cup vinegar and one cup water in a spray bottle.  Mildly acidic white vinegar dissolves dirt, soap scum, and hard water deposits from smooth surfaces, yet is gentle enough to use in solution to clean hardwood flooring.

I use old newspapers instead of paper towels to clean my mirrors and dry out my basins and bath. Newspaper is strangely effective and leaves a streak free result.

Remove crayon masterpieces from your TV or computer screen with WD40 (also works on walls).

Storage Options

My favourite part is sorting out everything and displaying them in their own areas. We have some great storage solutions for the kid’s bedroom and the lounge. My boys love their 4-cube storage unit, they actually enjoy displaying their favourite toys and books and it keeps everything off the floor. The rounded corners are great when you have toddlers around.

Hints & Tips:

Overhaul your linen cupboard – store bed linen sets inside one of their own pillowcases and there will be no more hunting through piles for a match.

Re-use a wet-wipes container to store plastic bags.

Maintaining the Spring Cleaning

I would recommend once a month having a small clean out of things especially little toys, magazines and books. This way you don't have a years worth of build up.

Extra Spring Cleaning Chores

There are some special chores that need to be done seasonally. We ignore them for most of the year, but now it is time to bite the bullet and get these things clean. Even though these chores only need to be done once or twice a year, they will help your home run look better and run smoothly. Outdoor chores like cleaning BBQ’s, patios, and windows can be a little intimidating, but there are some simple tricks to make it easier.

Good luck!
